Driving Outside the Box
Plot Overview
Having lost his partner Sara Morris (Karen Gillan) in a running battle outside of Staples Center, LAPD cop Vic Manning (Dave Bautista) is operating solo. As he's recuperating from LASIK eye surgery he gets a hot tip from his snitch Leon (Amin Joseph) about where he can intercept Morris's killer Oka Tedjo (Iko Uwais) if he hurries. Unable to drive he uses Uber to get him there. Uber driver Stu “Stuber” (Kumail Nanjiani), who is desperate for five stars, becomes Vic's de facto partner to everyone's amusement except Stuber's.
Ideology
Stu is working two jobs: one as a clerk for a sporting goods store and in his off time as an Uber driver. He is sad because he hasn't got an intimate partner. He's the man in, (Eccl. 4:7-8) “Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun. There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.” He is overinvested in his friendship with one Becca (Betty Gilpin) with whom physical intimacy would be a regrettable mistake. He should, perhaps, date around with girls he meets at the store or on his rides. People give him bad advice.
Vic is at loose ends without a partner. He's the man in, (Eccl. 4:9-12) “Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up. Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone? And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.” Vic does well to draft Stuber as a makeshift partner, and for that matter even his daughter Nicole (Nathalie Morales) could fill in in a pinch. The three of them together would make a team.
Production Values
“” (2019) was directed by Michael Dowse. Its writer is Tripper Clancy. It stars Dave Bautista, Kumail Nanjiani, and Mira Sorvino. The acting all round was adequate to the job.
MPAA rated it R for violence and language throughout, some sexual references and brief graphic nudity. It's rather a hodgepodge of tropes that it pulls off fairly well. It's consistently entertaining and sometimes touching.
Review Conclusion w/ Christian Recommendation
“Stuber” is a classic mismatched buddy movie with some action thrown in and a comedic undertone. If that's what you're interested in, go for it.
